Interview met K. Dylan Edrich (van o.a. Thee Oh Sees, Mikal Cronin, Ty Segall)
Het staat onomstotelijk boven water en we dulden geen tegenspraak: de beste popmuziek van de laatste jaren is afkomstig uit San Francisco. In dat kader verhaalde ik hier al uitvoerig over de beoogde ontsluiering van het mysterie K. Dylan Edrich. Op allerlei favoriete platen namelijk komt haar naam voor, en ik kon maar niet leven met het idee dat ik ooit zou moeten sterven zonder dit enigma ontrafeld te hebben. Gelukkig duurde het niet lang voordat ik haar online had gelokaliseerd & was ik er tevens in geslaagd wat rond te snuffelen op haar FB-pagina, alwaar ik op slinkse wijze onderstaande foto wist op te diepen.
Dankzij het wonder van internet was er vervolgens snel contact gelegd. Ze bleek reuze aardig en Kirstin en ik mogen elkaar inmiddels al Facebook-vrienden noemen (heeft zij effe mazzel.. :-)). Maar nu is het tijd voor de volgende stap, een interview! En wel het allereerste interview op De Kettingzaag ooit!
Even heel kort ter introductie: we kennen K. vooral van haar zeer fraaie viool- en ander snarenspel waarmee ze menig liedje naar een hoger plan tilt. Zo speelt ze samen met Frisco-grootheden als John Dwyer/Thee Oh Sees, Mikal Cronin en Ty Segall. Dankzij haar inbreng gaan platen léven, ja krijgen ze kleur, karakter, gevoel, diepte…..En daarnaast heeft ze ook haar eigen band The Mallard (ze schijnen weer opgekrabbeld te zijn), is ze sound-engineer én verdient ze de kost als muzieklerares. Een druk bazinnetje dus…
Ondanks haar vaak o zo smaakvolle bijdragen hebben we haar nooit op het podium mogen aanschouwen, ook al schijnt ze vorig jaar wel met Mikal Cronin op toernee door Europa te zijn geweest. Dat laatste kan ik dan ook mooi eens even gaan checken! Ook moet ik nog eens navragen hoe dat zit met haar thuisstad, want San Francisco schijnt de laatste jaren dusdanig overspoeld te worden met ‘dot-commers’ (dwz werknemers van de grote ICT-bedrijven aldaar) dat wonen vrijwel onbetaalbaar wordt en de gewone man noodgedwongen wegtrekt.
Veel platen van voornoemde artiesten verschijnen overigens op het geweldige Castle Face Records. Ter muzikale illustratie: op ‘Drop’, de nieuwe LP van Thee Oh Sees (sinds 3 weken uit) staat als laatste nummer het diamantje ‘The Lens’ verscholen. Ook hier een vermoedelijke hoofdrol voor Kirstin (?, weet ik niet zeker, zo te horen wel, ze bevestigt noch ontkent). Dit nummer benadert sergeant Pepper met gemak, dunkt mij. Doe jezelf een plezier en luister nou eens:
Q: You seem to be playing viola, violin, bass guitar… Do you have a classical training background, or..?
‘I am a multi-instrumentalist. I began at age 5 playing violin, and then took up piano at age 8 and guitar at 13. From there I just kinda went nuts! Today I can play about 13 instruments (all stringed and/or percussive) and I have recorded with many of them. I want to learn the flute next, maybe JD can teach me 😉 I play classical, jazz, folk, and of course rock!’
Q: For the past few years you’ve been playing on many of my fave records. How come we don’t see ya during live-shows as much as much as we’d like to?
‘I often work as a “studio musician” which means I come in for the recording process and add layers of magic to the mix during the sessions. Lots of times there’s no crossover to the stage; its either too complicated, too costly, or simply not desired! It is important to make records that have a sound beyond that of the live band, I believe, and so I am always just happy and proud to watch my friends play live on songs I helped record!’
Q: Did you play along with Mikal Cronin when he played in Tivoli De Helling during Holland’s/Utrecht’s Le Guess Who fest in 2013 ? (sorry, I was there but can’t remember it very well, there must’ve been too many drinks around!)
‘Yes that was a crazy show. It almost felt like a rave, with all the crowds outside! I played keys and violin with Mikal that night. I was on the righthand side.’
Oeps, wat lullig dat ik dat niet meer weet. Toch was het aan alle kanten een memorabele avond, niet in de laatste plaats omdat de aanwezige pop-pers het magistrale optreden van Thee Oh Sees nadien zou uitroepen tot ‘concert van het jaar.’ Voor een keertje was ik het daar nog mee eens ook… Gelukkig was mijn bloedeigen broertje ter plaatste om het gefilmde bewijs te leveren. Q: Are you currently involved in any new projects of your own? Can you tell me more about it?
‘I have pretty much always been an ensemble player — someone who plays parts in a band or group. It is such an awesome thing that comes when two or more musicians begin to play, and I can’t get enough of collaborating! But, I also realize that there is a whole other side to songwriting and music that I haven’t taken time to explore as much, and that is solo performing. I just this month got an acoustic guitar — my first one, incredibly — and next I’m going to haul a piano into my apartment so that I can spend time working alone. Recording is a totally different process than jamming, and I am enjoying learning it as I go. I plan to finish an album this year and then see if there’s a band I can create to perform it… it will not be garage rock.’
Q: The news that quite a few ‘rock-stars’ are leaving San Francisco now has even reached our shores recently. Are you also planning to leave? What would be your ideal home?
‘Ya know, it stinks that the cultural climate here in SF has turned kinda sour. The people coming in disrespect everyone and everything, and I understand why all the artists are leaving. My best friend just left for LA this morning!! I think about moving sometimes… but I don’t feel that moving would make my life better actually. The climate here is pretty much my ideal, and I still have the resources I need to be creative. The fact that the music scene is changing just creates space for something new, in my opinion. But when I think about moving, I think of New Orleans, Austin TX, and Berlin!’
Q: A friend of mine is quite outspoken about the guys you’re working with. She says that John is a fun guy, that Ty is a sweet guy and that Mikal is more of a serious type. Is she right, is she wrong? Or can they be bossy at times?
‘All three of these dudes have sides that are fun, sweet, and serious, and all three are excellent band leaders. I have so much respect for the work they do, and I love that they all see their music as an opportunity to positively affect their audiences. They basically work non-stop to bring people joy, catharsis, togetherness, ripping guitar– its beautiful.’
Q: Were you ever involved in a punk scene in any way? I mean, I’m sure most of the Castle Face crew were…. If no, what/who were your influences?
‘Haha, I have been in the underground music scene since I was 13 years old. Punk rock? It means a thousand different things depending where you are. I was a punk in Denver, CO where I grew up, and punk meant fighting against the boredom of suburbia. Then in NYC I helped to put on DIY shows in dozens of illegal spaces (warehouses, piss factories, auto garages, basements) for seven years and I think that is pretty punk rock. Thousands of bands got to play without getting dicked around by the system.’
Q: Do you actually participate in composing the songs? Or is it more like Eddie Van Halen vs Michael Jackson on ‘Beat It.’ I mean playing stuff and solos for days on end and finally, months later, finding out that they used only 10 seconds of guitar on one song. Is it like that?
‘I usually finish my tracks in a couple days or just one day at the studio. The process is always very improvisatory — meaning I write my parts and do whatever feels right– and I almost never prepare anything in advance. Together with the songwriter and the engineer I sculpt the right sounds for their song, creating a vision as we go along. We make sure to put down extra options when possible so that in the mixing process they can get what they need. I am never disappointed when I hear what they decide to use — sometimes I am very flattered by how prominent my tracks are!’

Ja kijk, daar noemt ze wat: POW!. Alweer een nieuwe band op Castle Face Records, met dit keer Kirstin in de rol van mixer/sound-engineer. POW!’s recente debuut High Tech Boom (via importwegen verkrijgbaar) staat bol van de blitze electropunk. Naast bijvoorbeeld een goedgekozen cover Vertical Slum (van de roemruchte Swell Maps), valt er nog een hoop meer te genieten. Op 26 mei speelt POW! samen met together PANGEA in Merleyn, Nijmegen (wie gaat er mee?). Luistert en huivert:
