Warm Soda van hun label getrapt

Vandaag even een spoedje over Mathhew Melton, je weet wel de voorman van K-Zaag favorieten Warm Soda. Van Warm Soda verschenen de afgelopen jaren een paar verdraaid leuke platen op Castle Face Records, het San Fransisco-label van Oh Sees-voorman John Dwyer. Ook hun punky pop optredens, waarvan een heel stel in Nederland, prikkelden tot de verbeelding. Neen, Warm Soda kan bij ons geen enkel kwaad doen!

Een maand of twee geleden, het was bijna finaal langs ons drukbezette wereldburgers heen gegaan eerlijk gezegd, kwamen er maar liefst twee nieuwe albums uit, beide onder aanvoering van Matthew Melton. We hebben het hier over de vierde LP van Warm Soda (“I don’t wanna grow up”) en de debuutplaat van zijn nieuwe band Dream Machine (‘The Illusion”) . Beide op Castle Face Records natuurlijk.

Vandaag verscheen er een persbericht van Castle Face, geschreven door Matt Jones, de mede-eigenaar van dat label:

“We’ve recently been made aware of some ugly opinions Matthew and Doris Melton of Dream Machine gave in a recent interwview in Still in Rock, as part of the promotion for their Castle Face LP that came out last month. Castle Face does not agree with the statements on ICE, immigration, feminism, and sexual assault and they are in no way representative of Castle Face or the other artists on the label. While we can’t do much about this record that’s just last month come out, or the 5 or so before it, we will not be working with them again. As independent record label runners, band members, and generally busy humans ourselves, we don’t always pore over everything that’s written about us or the artists on the label, and I posted this story to Facebook myself without reading the whole thing, and boy do I regret it now. Both John and I are appalled. We’ve urged them to make a statement, but it’s no longer our prerogative to be financing, promoting, and endorsing their music any more than we already have. For our part we’re going to find a decent charity to donate our end of the profits from the record to, though something tells me this won’t exactly send it flying off the shelves. Peace love and respect to all humans, refugees, and victims of violence – we’re horrified and ashamed by this and we appreciate people being upset but respectful in letting us know how they felt about it.” – Matt Jones – Castle Face Records

Huh, het eerste wat opvalt: is er tegenwoordihg ook een Doris Melton? Is Matthew getrouwd dan? En die nieuwe plaat van Warm Soda, hoe kon die zomaar aan onze aandacht ontglippen, is deze niet gepromoot dan? En een nieuw NL-toertje had best voor de hand gelegen eigenlijk, waarom kwam dat er niet? En dat Matthew een lastig figuur is dat wisten we al (een voorstel voor een interview met Kettingzaag werd ooit door hem genegeerd), maar zo erg? Kortom: vragen, vragen, vragen….

De antwoorden op deze prangende kwesties vinden we voor de verandering eens heel ouderwets terug op Matthew’s Wikipedia-pagina. Helemaal onderaan daar staat het volgende te lezen. Het begint met zijn eerdere verhuizing van Auckland, California naar Austin, Texas:

‘Commenting further on the move, Melton stated that “a lot of the move had to do with my wife. On the last Warm Soda tour I met and fell in love with, at first sight, my wife Doris, in Rotterdam. We came back to Oakland, but with the rising housing costs and all things considered we couldn’t do it”.

In February 2017, the band’s fourth and final studio album I Don’t Wanna Grow Up was announced. Released in April 2017, Melton did not perform any Warm Soda shows to promote the album and it peaked at #25 on American college radio music charts.

Released simultaneously with the last Warm Soda album, Melton released the debut album for new band Dream Machine in May 2017.^[32] The band features his Bosnian-born wife Doris Melton on organ. Promoting the album, the couple revealed that they were moving from the US to live in the Netherlands. Doris Melton commented that “American musicians (hopefully not Europe too) are getting increasingly politically correct and it started getting on our nerves. Living in Austin also was getting more and more expensive”, with Matthew Melton adding that he was “so excited to be moving to Europe, but I will always consider myself a red-blooded American. And just like the waves of refugees pouring into Europe I will also not be learning any new languages or culturally assimilating. We’re bringing Austin to Amsterdam” He also railed against social media and promiscuity.’

Kijk, en daarmee zijn we precies aanbeland bij de bewuste aanstootgevende uitspraken. Want wat staat er zoal te lezen in Still in Rock? Nou, lees zelf maar, het staat allemaal hier te lezen.

Onze conclusie: die Metthew Melton zien we nooit meer terug op de internationale podia. Maar de kans om hem in de nabije toekomst als ouwe sjacheraar in de straten van Amsterdam of Rotterdam tegen te komen is redelijk groot…
